Literacy Thursday

It's the second week of Literacy Thursday and I hope someone will join me this week in posting about one of your favorite children's books. It works like this: write a post on your blog about a favorite children's book. Give a shout out to my website on your blog post. Come to my website, sign your name and add the link to the exact post on your blog. That's it! It's that easy!

This week I have chosen The Napping House by Don and Audrey Wood. Cavett won this book in a raffle at school. I had never heard about the book until we brought it home. I realized the artwork was the same as some other singing books that we had.

This is not a singing/song book like last weeks, but it is still very cute. It is a cumulative story in that the sentence keeps growing adding a phrase making it easier for kids to remember and "read." It is also a good book for introducing synonyms. The book begins on a rainy afternoon. Granny is napping on the bed when the child comes in and climbs on top. Several more sleepers join in until.....I won't spoil the ending, but you can imagine. Very cute.

As I googled the title for a image of the book I ran across an excellent source for activities and things to notice in the artwork of this book. Click here! I love the idea about making up your own house by changing "Napping" to another verb. It's an excellent spring board for new writers.

"La casa adormecida", the Spanish version! It's in my collection from my bilingual classroom days. You're right, it's pretty awesome. Although the Spanish version almost always twisted my tongue too much!
