6 Days Left

6 Days left until school starts!

Today was Backwards Day.  Kendrick woke up first and I greeted them with "Good Night."  He looked at me very confused.  I continued talking backwards and he ignored me saying "I'm hungry."  I said, "What do you want for dinner?"  He started to get frustrated, not understanding until a couple of minutes later when Cavett woke up and opened up the calendar.  We were to walk backwards, talk backwards, eat backwards and wear our clothes backwards. 

They finally got the idea and agreed to Cheese and Mac for dinner at 7:30 AM.  The clothes were chosen and worn backwards including underwear and shoes.  We were walking backwards when we remembered--though the grocery store was the most interesting. 

We also were able to finish a few of our crafts we didn't do or hadn't finished from yesterday.   Slime (Glue, Borax, and water) was up first.  Kendrick made green and Cavett made blue.  Once it was mixed up Kedrick didn't want to have anything to do with it.  On the other hand, Cavett loved playing with it. 

We also finished our crayon art.  It turned out pretty well, but if we ever do it again, I'll use all Crayola Crayons.  The Dollar Store brand didn't melt very well.  It will probably hang in the game room upstairs. 

To close out the day we of course had breakfast for dinner--waffles, bacon and fruit--with our friend Walker who was spending the evening.  He even got into the spirit as well and turned his clothes around. 

It's the Final Countdown

Everybody needs a great 80's "Hair Band"  song at least once in their week.  Glad I can provide that for you and now you will be singing it for a while....

This is our final countdown to FIRST GRADE!  On Monday the kids awoke to our 7 day countdown calendar we used last year for starting school.  Last year, each one had school supplies in it.  This year I decided that each day would have a theme. 

7 Days Until School Starts- Creativity and Exploratory Day.

As a type A mom, I'm not good at letting my kids make messes, therefore I decided I needed a day purely devoted to messes.  We can wear old clothes, do it before the house cleaners get here this week and just let go.  It worked pretty well and we all had a great time. 

We blew up a bar of Ivory Soap in the microwave.

Started our rock candy growing crystals.

Stamped with veggies and Legos.  I think I had more fun with the Lego stamping than they did!

Set up our  melted crayon art.

Created 3 dimensional objects with spaghetti and marshmallows.

We didn't even get to everthing we planned to do!  (Peeling 100 crayons took quite a while!)  I think they throughly enjoyed the day and I really need to plan more days like this through the summer next year.  

Our Very Own Robot

This month in Family Fun magazine, there was a craft that was just too cute to pass up. Basically, it was Mr. Potato Head using a tin can and hardware with magnets attached to them. We raided Dad's tool box and then headed to Home Depot yesterday and picked out drain covers, electrical wires in fun colors, pulls, knobs, wire covers, washers, wing nuts, nuts, screws, hooks, and other such gadgits. To my unbelief, HD didn't have the magnets. Fortunately, Michael's was next door and had exactly what I was looking for.

Cavett and I spent the afternoon making funny faces and singing the Wall-E theme song. Good fun. One word of caution, if you try this at home let me know if you find a better way to attach the pieces to the magnets. I used hot glue (which is what "they" recommended). Hot glue is good for a little while, but later that evening I was already re-attaching pieces.
