Sports

I live with boys.  Sports and movement are a part of daily life, right?  In fact, it will be my life for the next 15+ years.  This really sunk in on Friday night.  Yes, Friday night is Kendrick's baseball practice.  My life is definitely no longer my own.  I'm also the team mom.  So, I'm going to embrace it and if you can't beat them, join them.  (Look for a blog coming on the football season...)

Kendrick had a short practice, but it was so cute.  His coach is actually Cavett's past soccer coach and he's so good with the kids.
This was heading to first base.  Some of them got it right!
They ran the bases yelling out what base it was and practiced throwing a ball.

Kendrick is furthest away from the camera.

He seems to already have a really good grasp on everything and was at the head of the pack, since he has a big brother and has been watching him for years now.  The first games will be on the 10th and both Cavett and Kendrick's games happen simultaneously for the first two weeks.

Tonight we got tickets to the Tom Landry Classic at SMU.

The Allen Eagles played the Cedar Hill Longhorns.  It was extremely impressive the number of Allen folks who showed up.  Cavett sat with Dad the majority of the time so that he could learn the game and how it all works.  We stayed for the first half until after the half time show.   At that point, we were winning 21-7.

The band was incredible of course.    Just to compare:

Here are the Longhorns.

Here are the Allen Eagles.

Oh, and here's the other half.

And, about 600 on the field!

I sure hope between the karate, the swimming, the baseball, the golf and whatever else they find fun, they will pick an instrument and play in the band as well.  But, if they don't I'll support them and cheer them on, no matter.

Hi-ya!

This week Cavett started Taekwando.  I know, I said we would never have done this many sports by now: soccer, swimming, baseball and now this.  But we found out that baseball season doesn't start back until the last week of March and after the "behavior issues" he has had at school, Cavett needs the discipline of self-control, listening and following instructions.  We had been discussing it over the New Year weekend and that one of Stephen's patients is an owner of a Karate school. He went to work on Monday and low and behold, that patient was in the office that day.  Coincidence?  I think not!

We went to observe one class on Wednesday and I was sold.  It's a 30 minute class and we can go as many times a week as we would like.  They emphasize behavior and holding still (like a black belt) and listening.  After every command, they said "Yes ma'am!"  There is a goal of the week with a home report card using things like-putting away your clothes, using your manners, helping your parents.

Unfortunately, they won't take Kendrick until he's four, but said they might squeeze him in after he has been watching Cavett for a couple of months.  Maybe it will provide incentive for potty training as well.

But Cavett is enjoying it and for now it's our "sport."  We'll see if we can keep it up during baseball season.

Playing Catch

Since Cavett's Sports Camp last week, he has been all about baseball. It was his favorite sport. This past Saturday I took him to buy new cleats for soccer and we ended up with a baseball glove as well. We watched him during camp and decided we needed to foster this desire.

He played catch with Kendrick in the house this morning. Only, I wouldn't let Cavett throw the ball. He had to roll it back to Kendrick and catch Kendrick's throws. Then Jonny came back by for lunch after his Millman interview and played a bit outside with him. Then this evening Stephn took him outside after Kendrick went to bed and threw a few balls. At times, Stephen couldn't decide whether he was watching a budding Nolan Ryan or a bad re-enacting of Bugs Bunny playing baseball with the wind up. It is a little hard since he is deciding which hand to use. He currently seems to throw better with his left, but only time and practice will tell. Catching is just as much of a struggle, especially since his hand is still a bit small for the glove. It was still tons of fun and Stephen even taught him "baseball banter."

So, if you are headed our direction anytime soon, get ready to throw a few baseballs. Everyone is fair game.

Separated

Cavett is in a sports camp this week at the Joe Farmer Recreation Center in Allen. Yesterday was his first day and I wasn't impressed....with Cavett. I got there when they were wrapping things up and summarizing. This was what I captured. He thought he knew everything and was arguing about the best way to dribble a soccer ball. (He was wrong.) Oh, what we will learn the next few years.

On the other hand, I have had some great quality time with Kendrick. It's the first time all summer. He needs this. I need this. Today we caught some time at the park feeding the ducks. I feel like I am missing out on so much of the "good, fun" of him, because either Cavett is constantly talking or drawing my attention away. Poor second children.
